Australian Film Festival Coming! 24th February to 7th March
7 Feb 2010, 8:52 pm

The inaugural Australian Film Festival is upon us! The website is live and there’s plenty going on! They’re kicking off with a screening of Mad Max on the 24th February with a Q&A featuring most of the original cast and crew – pretty cool!
There’s also a promo video here from the previous year that I prepared for the organisers, check it out.

Short & Sweet Play ‘The Big C’ – Directing in Week 6
1 Feb 2010, 8:50 pm

I am directing a play once again for Short & Sweet Sydney, running for the best part of a week:

Newtown Theatre Week 6 – February 10th – 14th
(Wednesday to Saturday at 8.15pm, Sunday 5.15pm)

My little description that I had to do in a hurry does not do it justice – it is a very funny little play, with a couple of wonderful actors playing the key roles:

The Big C
Writer: Shaun Tinkler (NSW)
Director: PJ Collins
Cast: Jackie Loeb (Deborah), James Belfrage (Max)

Deborah has just got bad news. Max is going to be sympathetic, or else! Bum size does matter, you know.

I’ll be around every night and will be in a proper paying seat on the saturday night.

If you feel like a night of fun and theatre, then come along and join us at the Newtown Theatre!

The Highs, The Lows

Just had one of those classic screwups. Nice possible project screwed up by poor communication.

To change or not to change. This is always the challenge for writers of screenplays – to hold tightly to the integrity of their work….. or actually see them made. Screenwriters know that the moment they sell their work they also lose control. It’s part of the process so they negotiate hard at that point then wave goodbye and get on with the next thing. Free work is more problematic.

Now, no-one likes having another person mess with their work (especially for free) and  it is ESSENTIAL when working with a new writer, to clearly demand absolute adaptation rights to begin with. Otherwise the dreaded confusion can set in.

Anyway you live and learn. Move on. The Bindleman still lurks!

Casting for ‘The Big C’ continues, I think I’ve locked in one of the leads but it’s not quite confirmed yet. More news when I have it.

Next Stop approval has had a hitch – it has been refused app store entry for a technical coding issue (not warning the user when there’s no internet connectivity), I hope to have a modified version ready for submission in the next 24/48 hours…

Other than that, things are good, the new house is coming along, my daughter is lovely and there’s another on the way… gulp!

New Short Film plus Short & Sweet plus BoomTime iPhone App!

Busy Busy Busy!

The Melbourne screening of Lovely Bits went well! Mark, the writer was able to attend and said it was a great night. Good on ya!

We’ve started preproduction on another short called ‘The Pussy Cat’, written by and starring Steve McGrath. We’ll be shooting that at the end of November. Inevitably it will end up being submitted to Tropfest, I hope in a finished state. Given how close the deadline is, I will have my work cut out over xmas! Will keep you updated on this blog.

I am also directing again at Short & Sweet Sydney! The play I’ve been given is called ‘The Big C’, which is a total farce and very funny. I do enjoy doing these little theatre things… More news on dates etc when I have them. Auditions start this coming weekend in Newtown. More Info here: http://www.shortandsweet.org/shortsweet/sydney

The iPhone app I have beenquietly working on has now been submitted to the App Store for approval (fingers crossed). It is a locational GPS Commuted and Vacation Alarm called ‘Next Stop GPS’. I have included some screenshots below. Basically you key in your stop, set it and forget it. The alarm will wake you at whatever distance from your bus/train/ferry stop that you set in the application. the website is being developed right now – www.nextstop-gps.com .

Here’s some screenshots:

I intend to put it on sale fo the stupendously low price of .99c, or $1.19 is Australia. More development is planned!

Finally, for those who’ve read this far, here’s another amusing video for you that I got sent last week. A Canal Plus advert – the best adverts are basically just commercialised short films.. enjoy..

Pop video / NIDA acting course
7 Oct 2009, 3:48 am

Well I’ve been keeping busy, shot a pop video in a studio in Redfern last week, a pretty simple affair. The studio was cool though. They have a website ‘under construction’ called www.antinutt.com. Anyway the video itself was for a song called ‘Smooch ya all over’ and involved the singer writhing around on a bed. However she refused to do ’sexy’ and spent most of the time miming with the look of a hostage stamped on her face. as if just beside the camera, someone was pointing a gun at her. But hey I was just the camera guy (thank god!). Amazing she spent money to get us all there and then made such a mess of it.. Thankfully someone else is also editing it! If there’s something worth sharing when it’s done, I’ll post it.

I followed this with a two day acting into course at NIDA. It was fun and all, but frankly I wasn’t overloaded with acting insights and I think it was too basic for where I’m at – someone who’s now worked with actors quite a lot. I was also the oldest person in the room by about 10 years which was a bit odd. Suddenly I’m the old cunt! Still it was fun to roleplay and we had a laugh. It has definitely inspired me with some more changes to the next short film production ‘The Alpha Bindleman’!

Helped out last week on a TV pilot, as a camera operator. It was run by a bunch called Indianic Films who were pretty organized. I liked the DP, Evan Papageorgiou. Nice bloke for a change.. Anyways hope it works out for them.

All booked in for the trip to Phillip Island in a couple of weeks :-)

I’m also booked into an acting course over the weekend.. Thought it would be useful to see what it’s like on the other side of the camera!
